As the impact of climate change becomes more and more visible, in droughts, floods, deadly wildfires, and warming seas and other effects, rising temperatures have become deadly to many American workers. Most of the ones who suffer are migrants in low-wage jobs. Unlike the Teamsters UPS workers, who just won the right to have air conditioning in their trucks, they sweat it out in a warehouse, a kitchen, or outside in the blazing sun. There is no federal heat standard in the U.S., and in states, there are no heat-specific standards either. Industries oppose set standards for those on the job in fear that mandated protections will eat away at their bottom line.
