Attacks on transit workers have been going on for years. Subway conductors, cleaners, bus drivers, and others, who are more likely than not to be working alone, have continuously been made the target of violent criminals, many of them with multiple past arrests and long rap sheets. The Transit Workers Union (TWU) has now filed a formal grievance against the MTA, for what the union says is a lack of protection for their members. Grievous harm, such as the throat slashing of a conductor at 3 a.m., who was only saved by a doctor who happened to be on the train, to the violent multiple stabbings of a cleaner on the job who has had to undergo two surgeries after being in critical condition, and was saved by police who were nearby and arrested the perpetrator. Local 100 VP Canella Gomez said, “We need major policy changes to keep us safe.”
