On Earth Day, top union officials at the AFL-CIO hosted an event aimed at bringing particularly relevant issues to the fore. President Liz Shuler and Secretary-Treasurer Fred Redmond were present, and the focus of the occasion was climate, equity and jobs. Also there were Biden administration representatives, along with racial justice, environmental and environmental justice groups, workers who have been directly impacted by climate change, and many others. Climate change, with the higher temperatures it brings, impacts all workers, but particular those that are Black and Brown. “Workers of color disproportionately hold essential jobs with high exposure [to heat],” said Rajesh Nayak, assistant secretary for policy, DOL. The AFL-CIO has outlined a plan to combat the continuing issues, and to ensure good union jobs in clean energy going forward.
