The Transport Workers Union of America has applauded a $2 million fine that the Department of Transportation has levied on JetBlue. The airline has consistently delayed flights, and TWU International President John Samuelsen weighed in on the matter, saying that chronic delays are the result of “massive understaffing”. He called out the airline for not investing in workers, resulting in turnover of “critical workgroups like its Aircraft Maintenance Technicians through their industry-trailing wages, work rules, and benefits. Management would rather waste money on anti-union consultants,” he said, “instead of hiring more workers to get more flights arriving on time.” TWU Local 579 President Tyesha Best, representative of JetBlue Flight Attendants, says that the delays, in New York, North Carolina, Florida and Connecticut, left on-board staff dealing with angry customers and their own disrupted schedules.
