In this time of mass wealth grabs that are sweeping the globe and transforming America, it’s nice to see small victories for working women and men. Popular online food delivery company DoorDash has been fined $16.75 million in a settlement, announced State Attorney General Letitia James, in a “betrayal of trust” she called it, over pay practices. The company, between 2017 and 2019, had shorted thousands of workers on tips they had received from customers who believed the money had been going to them, only to have it used by DoorDash to subsidize the workers’ minimum wage. The settlement is accompanied by the requirement of six months of compliance reports for the next three years and more transparency for delivery workers. Labor organization Los Deliveristas Unidos, affiliated with the Workers Justice Project, helped organize thousands of delivery workers in the city for higher wages as well.
