Dollar General, the ubiquitous chain store that rakes in billions of dollars per year, has been ignoring worker suffering, and even dozens of deaths of workers and customers by armed robberies. Now, the U.S. Department of Labor and the Dollar General Corp., have finally, after numerous protests and support from local activist groups, reached a settlement whose primary aim is to expand the stores’ safety structure, and health management system. The chain has also been slapped with a $12 million penalty for its workplace safety violations, such as blocked or locked exit doors, recalling one of the hazards that led to the deadly Triangle Shirtwaist Fire.  These issues have been plagued by federal OSHA violations, some going back to 2017. DOL has put in place a number of “incentives” for the company to change its tune: hundreds of thousands of dollars per day” for fines among them.
