Gov. Andrew Cuomo was the target of almost every criticism made at the New York State United Teachers convention in Buffalo last weekend. NYSUT President Karen Magee joked May 1 that the governor was “the greatest union organizer in modern New York state history,” while United University Professions President Fred Kowal led a rally at City Hall in chanting “Wrong and gone!”
The union also celebrated victories in getting four new members of the Board of Regents appointed—“every single one of them with actual experience as educators in New York public schools,” Magee said. Catalina Fortino, NYSUT vice president, said the union would “bring the state to the table for a new accountability system… one that rejects junk science and one that advances professional growth for quality teaching and learning.” Read more
