Mandates for vaccination were in place for several years when COVID was at its worst, and some city workers simply refused to comply with it. That led to their firing, though not everyone suffered that fate. Some, particularly 30 school educators, submitted fake vax cards and were allowed to return to their jobs. A twist on the story is that now, the Adams administration has pushed for a law that would require those who wish to now be reinstated, to sign waivers barring them from suing over back pay or civil-service rights. Under those rights, they would also lose their seniority and hired back as rehires. “I just want to go back to throwing garbage in the rain,” said Daniel Hulkower, one of the workers fired in 2022 for refusing the vaccine.
