Bronx, NY—The state comptroller's office recently released a report about economic development in the Bronx, highlighting the growth of businesses and private and public sector growth. Ruben Diaz Jr., the Bronx Borough President, said he's pleased with the economic gains so far but there's still a long way to go. Watch Video
According to the New York State Department of Labor's June unemployment figures, Bronx County has one of the state's highest unemployment rates, at 11.8 percent out of a population of about 1.4 million people. But in March the Center for an Urban Future released a report, "New York's New Business Boom," arguing that out of all the boroughs the Bronx had the fastest growth in new business incorporations between 1991 and 2011, from 1,159 to 4,690.
In an interview with Labor Press, Mr. Diaz Jr. discussed how economic development is taking shape in the Bronx and how he hopes it proceeds.
