Almost 20 years ago, a lawsuit brought against the USDA by black farmers was finally settled. It was followed by lawsuits by other marginalized groups. They all alleged and produced examples that showed they were discriminated against, by being denied access to low-interest rate loans and loan servicing, as well as grant programs and assistance. The result was record economic foreclosures and millions in economic losses. And despite the black farmers’ lawsuit, Eddie Lewis, a farmer in Lousiana, said, “We’re struggling to the point where we’re going to be extinct.”
