Long Island, NY — Best Market on Long Island continues to have a record of low pay, minimal benefits, and gender discrimination.
On July 30th Union members, community representatives and legislators demonstrated in front of Best Market’s East Meadow store. This notorious non-union supermarket chain is considered one of the worst places on Long Island for employees. The rally was coordinated by UFCW/RWDSU Local 338 along with Jobs with Justice. Throughout the demonstration supporters held signs in English and Spanish that read “Fair Wage + Affordable Healthcare,” “Best Market Runs on Humans,” “Long Island Deserves Quality Food Jobs” and ”You Have to Do Better to be Best.”
At the rally New York State Sen. John Brooks stated that Best Market has “to realize that their objective is to make a profit out of the products they sell, not off the backs of the people who work for them.” Other legislators that attended include New York State Senators Monica Martinez, Kevin Thomas, and Jim Gaughran, and New York State Assembly Member Michaelle Solages.
Best Market is owned by German multinational discount supermarket chain Lidl, which operates over 10,000 stores across Europe and the United States. Lidl’s low-cost business model includes paying workers as little as possible without providing benifits to employees.
