Leaders of unions are making a massive effort to turn out members’ votes for Harris/Walz in the upcoming election. In a call with reporters on October 18, those union leaders as well as national and crucial battleground workers are putting out the word that a Trump presidency would be “horrible for workers,” as Wisconsin State AFL-CIO President Stephanie Bloomingdale put it. Rich Howel, vice president of Pennsylvania State Council of Machinists and former president of IAM Local 1776 in Philadelphia, put it in pithy words when he counseled workers, “you want to be at the table, not on the menu.” Liz Shuler, president of the AFL-CIO, said that, “We’ve contacted 1.6 million voters in-person,” and that the AFL-CIO and their affiliated unions will reach out to 5 million more voters in the battleground states.
