On April 15, two bills that had been endorsed by the Teamsters were passed by the California Assembly Transportation Committee. They would regulate autonomous vehicles (AV) in the state. The Teamsters supported the bills, saying they were needed to protect public safety and protect good union jobs. Chris Griswold, Teamsters International VP At-Large and President of Teamsters Joint Council 42 said that autonomous vehicle companies need to be held accountable, and added, “From robotaxis to autonomous big rigs, AVs should not be operating on our roads without a human driver behind the wheel.” Robotaxis have already been involved in fatal and injurious collisions with pedestrians, blocked first responders, and come within seconds of colliding with children, among other dangerous incidents.
