The past frequency of asbestos exposure in unionized professions such as the CWA, highlights the need to acknowledge this threat; which can lie dormant for 20 to 50 years. Asbestos exposure leads to mesothelioma, a lethal cancer without cure. Its past popularity as an insulator means it found use in hundreds of industrial applications throughout offices and factories. Furthermore, evidence suggests many employers knew of the risks of asbestos, which has been used for thousands of years, yet chose not to warn workers or provide proper safety equipment.
