New York, NY – Concrete Workers Local 18A’s members are building New York every day, serving the five boroughs of New York City. They specialize in concrete and construction craft labor for contractors throughout the City.

Outstanding Apprentice of the Year David Tamayo Isac had a different journey from most. Emigrating from Cuba, he was able to find opportunity among the many cultural differences. Now, he participates in the workforce, and employs his considerable skills to complete the necessary work that is part of his career. LaborPress spoke to Isac to learn more about his journey, what he thinks about his adopted homeland, and what unions mean to him.

LP: You came to the United States from Cuba. At what age, and were there important differences that stood out immediately?

DTI: I immigrated to the U.S. on November 14, 2020 at the age of 22. My whole process of adaptation to a new country and culture has been an impressive one. I am always learning new things that are interesting both at work and in my personal life.

LP: Do you feel that you have had all the opportunities in the United States that you would have liked? 

DTI: I feel that I have had the opportunities that I was looking for. 

LP: What is your opinion of unions in general and what has been your experience at Local 18A? 

DTI: I consider unions to be the most important workforce in the U.S. and the best option for workers. If we are united and in sync we can face any obstacle. As far as Local 18A, without a doubt I describe my experience as excellent. I have had the opportunity to work and build friendships with other members. I feel respected and well represented by Local 18A, I am proud and grateful to be one more member of Local 18A. 

LP: What are the specific types of work that 18A provides? 

DTI: It provides concrete works, foundations, building construction and concrete renovation in old buildings. 

LP: What did you think of the training program? Did it prepare you well for your jobs?

DTI: I can affirm that I am grateful to the teachers of the program for their dedication and discipline when teaching; this makes the program an unforgettable experience from which I was able to learn and prepare myself for work. 

LP: What job are you currently working on and what are your specific tasks? 

DTI: I am working with Long Island Concrete at 2 Penn Plaza. In this job my tasks are stripping, placing concrete, cutting and breaking concrete, drilling concrete for rebar placement, cleaning work areas and collecting tools at the end of the job, among other things.

LP: Do you enjoy your job?

DTI: Yes, I enjoy and love my job. 

LP: What is your favorite part of the trade? 

DTI: My favorite part was the whole program process both at school and at work. 

LP: Can you share a bit about your family?

DTI: Yes, I am married and have 2 children: Nadia Tamayo Lawrence and Abraham Tamayo.

LP: Where do you reside now? 

DTI: In the borough of Manhattan!
