On Friday, Feb. 2, Juan Jose Coc, a construction worker, married and with a child, fell to his death in Jersey City. Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop and other politicians attended a vigil, as did family members, who asked to remain anonymous. Bernard Callegari, assistant regional manager for LIUNA, said that although statistics prove that construction is one of the most dangerous occupations in the U.S., there is a collective indifference to the risks the workers face every day. What makes this even more heinous is that immigrant workers in the industry have been treated terribly after serious injuries, by major real-estate companies such as Kushner and LeFrak.
