New York, NY – On Friday September 19, 2014 the New York City Council unveiled landmark legislation aimed at strengthening the City’s commitment to a greener, more environmentally-friendly future. This comprehensive legislative package will address key areas in the fight against global climate change. It's expected that greenhouse gas emissions will be reduced while increasing energy efficiency. The legislative program will also encourage low-carbon transportation. Most experts agree that global climate change is a clear threat to the planet.
“This landmark legislative package and policy platform reaffirms our commitment to creating a sustainable future for New York City,” said Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito. “When New York speaks the world listens, and with these initiatives we will continue to serve as a model for cities everywhere in the fight against climate change. These pieces of legislation will make our city greener, more sustainable and more environmentally friendly and that is something that will benefit all New Yorkers.”
Over the past few years, the New York City Council has passed over 100 pieces of legislation regarding improving climate conditions. This has reduced carbon emissions and improved air and water quality in the city. Continuing this important initiative, the present City Council has now proposed that benchmarks be met to reduce the city's emissions by 80% by 2050.
“Climate change continues to pose a unique set of challenges to the physical, economic and social landscape of our city," said Council Member Donovan Richards, Chair of the Committee on Environmental Protection. "This environmental platform is a part of the Council’s continued dedication to facing and addressing the full spectrum of New York City’s environmental concerns.”
Providing cleaner air in the big apple will not only improve the overall health for New Yorkers but also create new green jobs. The Passage of this package of “green” legislation will also improve public transportation, conserve energy and result in cost savings to the municipality. The Council also plans to pass legislation that requires the construction of future buildings to be “zero carbon” or “net zero energy” efficient.
