In a win for unions in this difficult time, the state House of Representatives in New Hampshire has voted, 200-180, to indefinitely postpone House Bill 238, which would have converted New Hampshire into a right-to-work state. This change would have prohibited collective bargaining agreements from requiring employees join or contribute to a union. Several Republicans crossed the aisle to block the legislation. However, one, Rep. Stephen Pearson, found it necessary to say that Trump himself had removed right-to-work from his national platform. Opponents of right-to-work said the policy weakens unions by taking away their leverage to negotiate, empowering people who don’t pay into the union yet still reap the benefits of said union, and interfering with agreements between workers and their employers. Unions including the Teamsters, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, and United Steelworkers organized protests of the bill.
