On Feb. 10, there were 10,000 members of the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 7 out on strike in Colorado. They are workers at King Soopers; the stores are owned by Kroger, which is the largest supermarket chain in the U.S. Their contracts had expired in Jan., they had voted by 96% to authorize a two-week long unfair labor practice strike, and that was during the Super Bowl and Valentine’s Day weekends as well. One of the issues is, like many industries, short staffing, which leads to a host of troubles for both the workers and customers. Kroger’s actions against union activities are loathsome that it has only spurred the workers on.
