A new book, Our (In)visible Work, by Janelle E. Wells, Ph.D, and Doreen MacAulay, Ph.D., brings to readers’ attention the cesspool of discrimination and strife that awaits Black peoples’ experience in the workplace. There is a long list here of just what the authors mean to illuminate: how Blacks have to manage stereotypes, navigate racism, and moderate their appearance, among other difficulties that cause burn-out and stress. There are also Black executives who are thrown onto a “glass cliff,” meaning that they are put in a position of leadership only when the ship is going down. They often then, go down with it, through no fault of their own. One assumes that the company takes credit for putting a Black person in a high position, knowing that their chances of success are most likely minute.
