REI, the so-called “co-op,” an outdoor gear company, which cultivates a progressive image for its customers, finds itself in a conflict with its workers again. Workers there had formed a union, the first being at its flagship SoHo store in Manhattan, and others in various states. Now, REI SoHo Ski Shop Workers, who had unionized with the RWDSU, are on the picket line. They are protesting a grotesque turn of events in their working conditions, regarding the necessity of PPE. Their job duty is to work with chemicals, between 8-15 pairs a day on the peak Ski Season days, which require melting plastic and wax. Previously, they had the use of respirators, and now REI has removed all of the PPE necessary for worker health.
