In a blatant blitz of union-busting, Costco has escalated its attack on workers’ rights. Like other corporations such as Starbucks and REI “Co-op” the outdoor gear store with multiple locations, Costco has claimed to be “worker friendly” says Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien. He explains that the company has “trampled on federal labor law,” and calls the hugely successful chain store executives “greedy, deceitful, and anti-worker.” The union has filed multiple unfair labor practice charges against Costco for violating federal labor law and the national master agreement. There are negotiations for a new national master agreement covering more than 18,000 Costco Teamsters nationwide to resume nest week. Meanwhile, in the past 2 days, Costco has upped its anti-union behavior, by expelling union representatives from stores, and harassing and intimidating workers, among other behaviors calculated to crush worker spirit.
