Proposition 2 has been passed in New York City. What it means is that street vendors, most of whom are operating without a license, which are generally denied, are now subject to a whole new set of rules and regulations. The city can now more easily confiscate vendors’ goods and arrest them, say advocates for the vendors. Harry Nespoli, president of the Uniformed Sanitationmen’s Association, said that the way that the new rule will play out is likely that police will first remove the vendors, while the sanitation workers would then move in for the cleanup. Mayor Adams declared the vote a success, and said, “This is a great day for everyone who desires a safer city, [and] cleaner streets.”
