“Scabby the Rat” is well-known and well-used by unions. The gigantic rat which can be seen on New York streets has been used to call out companies and corporations as a symbol of worker abuse of all types. But Scabby had never been seen as art before an exhibition at the Open Source Gallery brought him (or her) into the public realm of art lovers. The artist who created the show is Marlene Hausegger, the name of the show, “Scabby: A Rat About Town”. She worked with the New York State Laborer’s Union, used Bruce Springsteen’s song “Factory”, added photographs, and much more.
