The Teamsters had good reason to celebrate at the end of July, as they tackled and broke some of the most heinous practices employed towards union workers in Illinois. SB 3469, Illinois Worker Freedom of Speech Act, has great significance not only for workers in that state, but hopefully, is a ray of light that will eventually extend to other states and employees. The legislation bans the widespread use of mandatory attendance at captive audience meetings, designed to spread anti-union propaganda, and discourage organizing. Thomas W. Stiede, President of Teamsters Joint Council 25, credited the rank-and-file union members in Illinois, and said, “the Teamsters were the frontline of that battle.”
