On June 26, the Independent Drivers Guild, a driver-led advocacy group, held a rally outside the headquarters of Uber, in Long Island City. The rally was at full-steam to protest a practice by ride-share companies called “forced lockouts.” This practice, which is really a way to circumvent rules by the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission, is when drivers are unable to log in to their apps in order to drive, during idle time. This significantly reduces the hours during which the drivers can get work, and thus, get paid. Uber is supposed to pay drivers about $28/hr for being online, but Uber has now found its way around those NYCTLC rules.
