The fight over the switch from traditional Medicare and Medigap to Medicare Advantage for retirees is not over. Now, despite a number of losses in the courts, the Adams administration has petitioned the Court of Appeals to rule on its behalf and shift 250,000 retirees to the for-profit Medicare Advantage Plan. The administration took a hit when the UFT, which had previously supported the change, abruptly changed sides, and things have further deteriorated, as both sides exchange barbs which have come close to threats. City attorneys said in their appeals motion that those who want their traditional coverage face “dire consequences” if they are successful. Meanwhile, the president of the New York City Organization of Public Service Retirees, shot back, saying, about Adams, “Maybe the taxpayers and retirees will let him know how we feel about that in November.”
