The UAW just lost a union election at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Vance, Ala., but UAW President Shawn Fain says the drive for unionizing foreign auto firms in the notoriously anti-union South will continue. The union had triumphed at the Volkswagen plant in Tenn. But all was not lost in Ala., as the company hurried to make concessions to workers in an effort to stave off unionization, while at the same time employing tried-and-true union-busting techniques such as captive audience meetings, and firing and threatening workers. AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler did not mince words when she weighed in on the continued fight, saying, “That obstruction is part of a long oppressive history in the South, from slavery to Jim Crow ‘right to work’ laws to prison labor.”
