Nurses all over the country have vehemently decried understaffing and low wages for years, saying it puts patients at risk and leads to burnout in the profession. Now, over the last eight months, over 1,000 nurses have been hired in the city’s public hospital system. Temporary nurses had been filling gaps, at great cost, and this move aims to hire more permanent nurses and reduce reliance on the temporary workers. In 2022, NYC H+H spent $589.9 million on the latter, as well as paying a staffing agency $1.2 billion. New York State Nursing Association (NYSNA) had negotiated for better pay and staffing in their last contract, leading to the ability to attract new nurses.
