Members of the New York State Nurses Association at two Northwell Health hospitals in Long Island are getting ready to walk on Feb. 21, unless they get contracts that address pressing issues. 700 nurses at Peconic Bay Medical Center and Long Island Jewish Valley Stream want fair raises and a higher level of staffing. Understaffing of nurses, with too many patients assigned to one nurse, has been widespread at hospitals in many states, leading to burnout and attrition. Nurses have made it clear that not having adequate staffing puts patients at risk.
