The Committee on Health, Education, Labor & Pensions held a hearing in New Jersey to listen to nurses make their case for the passage of the Nurse Staffing Standards for National Hospital Safety Act. The Act was introduced earlier in the year by Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown. It would establish minimum staffing levels at hospitals and provide nurses with whistleblower protections. Understaffing that nurses say endangers patient care has been widespread and ongoing, triggering strikes and mass resignations. “I’ve been in situations where I know if I had fewer patients, I might have been able to save a patient’s life. It is the worst feeling you can imagine,” testified Nancy Hagans, president of National Nurses United.
