Workers are exploited in a multitude of ways, but one way that is rarely talked about is the theft of workers’ time. Particularly since the pandemic, when remote work became widespread, the practice of supervisors and/or colleagues contacting employees after working hours has become a real problem. These workers are not paid for what has been estimated as hundreds of extra hours per year. Specifically addressing this issue for city workers, a bill to combat this has been taken up by the City Council’s Civil Service and Labor Committee. New rules would be laid down to limit contact time and hours.
