The strike scheduled by UPS Teamsters for August 1 has been averted. A tentative agreement between the two sides has been reached. It would have been the biggest strike at a single private-sector employer in decades. Wall Street had warned it could have sent the U.S. economy into a tailspin. Negotiations broke down on July 5, but were resumed on July 25, when UPS broke down and gave in to particular Teamsters demands they had previously refused to entertain, including immediate raises for both full and part-time workers, the creation of 7,500 full-time jobs, and the abolishment of forced overtime, among other wins. General President of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters Sean O’Brien said it was, “the best contract in the history of UPS.”
