The Transport Workers Union Local 100, representing thousands of subway and bus workers, has partnered with State Senator Jessica Ramos and Assembly Member Pheffer Amato in pursuit of amendments to the Taylor Law. That law prohibits strikes by certain public service workers, including transit workers. The legislation was introduced on Mar. 16. In Dec. 2005, a three-day strike led to the union’s then-president’s arrest and a multi-million dollar fine, which came out of the members’ pockets. The union’s current contract expires in May, and the new legislation would permit a strike if negotiations and mediation fail to result in a fair contract.
