New York, NY – The East Side Coastal Resiliency Project is now moving forward providing urgently needed flood protection for 110,000 New Yorkers along the East Side of Manhattan.

The ESCR is a critical project to protect  New York neighborhoods from the effects of climate change and future storms.  The resiliency of coastal communities will be increased while improving  East River Park and creating new open space and recreational areas for New Yorkers. The goal is to ensure that Lower East Side neighborhoods will have protections in place during a future superstorm.

It’s expected that the construction will be completed in the most sustainable manner possible in order to qualify for Envision Platinum Certification. The project addresses climate change and is being built for a 100-year useful life.

In October 2019, Mayor deBlasio announced a phasing plan in response to community concerns about access to recreational space during the construction period. Under this plan, nearly half of East River Park will remain open at all times throughout construction, and continuous flood protection will still be delivered by the start of the 2023 hurricane season. The full project will reach completion in 2025.

“The East Side Coastal Resiliency Project will protect New Yorkers for years to come, and at every step of the way, we will continue to ensure the community is kept informed of progress and that their voice is heard,” said Mayor de Blasio.
