LORDSTOWN, Ohio—In repercussions from General Motors’ decision to close its Lordstown assembly plant, a nearby car-seat manufacturer has warned workers that they will be laid off within two months. The Magna company filed a federally required Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification with the state labor department informing the 120 employees of its Lordstown Seating Systems that they will lose their jobs when it stops production in late February. The plant makes seats for the Chevy Cruze, which GM had announced it would stop producing at Lordstown and lay off the last 1,600 United Auto Workers Local 1112 members there. Magna told its workers, also Local 1112 members, that they should expect to be out of work for at least six months. It said it might “recall a significant number of employees” if GM decides to make another vehicle in Lordstown and selects Magna as a seat supplier—but if both those things don’t happen, “these layoffs should be considered permanent.” Read more
