Gov. Bruce Rauner and American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Council 31 announced June 26 that they had “reached an agreement that precludes the possibility of a strike or lockout” for the month of July while contract talks continue.
The state’s contract with Council 31, which represents most of its more than 40,000 workers, will expire June 30. “The Rauner administration continues to make extreme demands, leaving the two sides very far from a settlement,” the union said earlier this month. The governor has pushed for cuts in public services, called for the elimination of pensions for future state employees, and had an executive order that prevented state unions from collecting fair-share fees from non-members overturned by a federal court.
