The New York State United Teachers was pleased last week that they had staved off the worst of Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s education schemes, but they’re still dissatisfied with changes included in the state budget.
Teachers’ evaluations won’t rely on students’ test scores as much as Cuomo wanted, but those whose students don’t do well won’t be able to get a rating higher than “developing”—only one step above “ineffective.” "It's not based on anything that is sound or good for schools and good for kids," NYSUT President Karen Magee said. "What are we trying to do? Are we trying to create a plan that is actually good for students? Or are we trying to make a plan that goes after teachers?" She said April 2 that the union would continue to support parents who don’t want their children to take standardized tests. Read more
