Whatever one’s opinion of the presence of the Republican and Democratic presidential candidates at the 9/11 commemoration on Wednesday, there can be no denying that at least for some it was a battle for political gain. VP Kamala Harris, newly anointed Democratic hopeful, and Donald Trump, were both in evidence just hours after their debate. Meanwhile, those who organize the tribute to fallen victims of the tragedy, and family members who now have generations born since then, have worked to keep the focus on the victims. Thousands of innocent civilians died on that day, hundreds of firefighters, while thousands of volunteers and first responders such as transit workers, police officers, ambulance drivers, and many others became ill from their work at the toxic site, were grieved, and politics were not at the top of mind for those who attended for the right, true reasons.
