Five bills with the aim of helping EMS workers financially and otherwise have cleared the hurdle of the New York State Senate. They have yet to move out of committee in the Assembly, and it is required that identical legislation be passed by the latter. However, EMS workers have been voicing their concerns for years in the capital, and these bills do address some of them. Provisions in the bills include allowing ambulance providers to be reimbursed by Medicaid when they treat a patient at their location without transporting them to a hospital, for which they currently receive no pay. Senate Democrats also support a bill that would designate EMS as an essential service.
