Three high visibility chain eateries in NYC – Panda Express, Au Bon Pain, and 7-Eleven’s ‘Raise the Roost’, have been ordered by the City Department of Consumer and Worker Protection to pay a total of $4.5 million in penalties. The source of the fines is the finding that all three had been in violation of the NYC Fair Workweek Law. The measure was signed into law by Mayor de Blasio in 2017, and Comptroller Brad Lander said it would bring legal protections to employees against management doling out “unpredictable, unfair, and disruptive work schedules.” The money will go to nearly 2,400 workers. The three entities also owe $417,000 in civil penalties.
