The NYPD has shared recent data detailing the rise in felony assaults against NYPD officers in 2023. There was a 18.5% rise in attacks since 2022. Union officials say increasingly liberal laws are to blame. Paul DiGiacomo, the president of the Detectives Endowment Association, said the City Council in Albany and the Senate and the Assembly are putting out the message that “It’s OK to do whatever you want to law enforcement.” Lou Turco, president of the Lieutenants Benevolent Association, said that even when a perpetrator is brought to justice, once in the court system, “it gets lost”, while the president of the Police Benevolent Association, Patrick Hendry, says that “the system favors criminals over cops,” and that they are not seeing jail time.
