The 114th Anniversary Commemoration of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire, the horrific tragedy in which the lives of 146 women were lost, was held on Tuesday, March 25, at the corner of Greene Street and Washington Place. The women, garment workers, mostly Italian or Jewish immigrants, died in the fire because bosses had kept the doors on each floor locked to prevent the young workers from taking breaks. Labor leaders, workers, activists, government officials and descendants of victims attended the ceremony. The attendees reflected on how the tragedy led to a fight for stronger worker protections and fire safety laws.
