ICE, under the auspices of Donald Trump, has been detaining and arresting union members, but also, particularly, organizers and immigrant workers. In response, ten national unions along with dozens of locals, which together represent over 3 million members, have issued a statement opposing these actions and demanding the release of those persecuted. Union officials are comparing times today under Trump to other times in history when the government suppressed protest and dissent. Leftists and labor activists were arrested and deported; during the McCarthy era, a wide swath of workers and those in various careers were forced to testify and sometimes jailed. The hope is that by coming together the power and strength of these millions of workers will be employed in retaining their rights.
