The WTO is authorizing over a billion dollars in trade sanctions against the U.S. unless country of origin meat labels on food are dropped. Global Trade Watch's Melinda St. Louis says this is a glaring concrete example of how trade agreements trump public policy decisions made by Americans.
[Melinda St. Louis]: "This did not go through U.S. courts. This is a tribunal outside of our court system, made up of trade lawyers who decide whether our consumers' right to know where our meat comes from was a violation of these broad corporate rights that are enshrined in these international agreements." St. Louis says the coming TPP is even worse. [Melinda St. Louis]: "Not only can governments sue, but an individual corporation can do that, can then seek millions or billions of dollars in taxpayer compensation. And it really should outrage people, it should get people motivated to make sure that we don't expand this type of terrible so-called trade policy through the TPP.
