Washington, DC – [David Groves]: “Advocates for working families should keep their chins up and keep fightin’ the good fight.

Even though there’s a dark cloud over our nation right now with what happened in the presidential race, there are a lot of victories happening around the country in various places and certainly in Washington state and elsewhere that we can build upon.

And we shouldn’t feel discouraged. We should just keep fighting harder than ever before.” Washington State AFL-CIO Labor Council’s David Groves.

Groves says in Washington state labor has won some victories, proving progress for workers is possible if we keep fighting. And much of that fight can happen at the state level.

[David Groves]: “One example would be the overtime pay decision that the Texas judge just suspended. Supposed to take effect December 1st but now it won’t. Well every state has the ability to set its own threshold for the overtime pay exemption. It just has to at least be what the federal level is, which is way too low.

In this past election we were able to pass a statewide initiative that will raiser Washington’s minimum wage to $13.50 an hour over the next four years. And at the same time it will also allow every worker in Washington state to earn some paid sick leave.”
