Walmart Workers Joining #FastFor15

Washington, DC – I’m one of many thousands of working people who faces hunger and food insecurity, despite working for the largest retailer in the world. The Walton family has more wealth than 42% of our country combined, but Walmart associates like me are struggling to put food on the table.

Too often Walmart associates have to skip meals, stretch food bank rations until pay day, and sacrifice food for ourselves so that our children can eat. I’m sick and tired of it, and I’m done being quiet about it. For fifteen days leading up to Black Friday, Walmart associates and our supporters across the country will fast to call attention to the hunger crisis facing hundreds of thousands of Walmart associates and their families.

Right now, I’m staying with friends because I can’t afford a place of my own. Despite being classified as “full-time,” I rarely get to work more than 34 hours a week. What I bring home isn’t enough to pay for necessities like food and housing. I think that’s a disgrace. We’re fasting for $15 and real full-time schedules at 40 hours each week so that everyone who works for Walmart can afford to consistently feed themselves and their families.
