Washington, DC – I was outraged when I heard that Volkswagen cheated its emissions tests, putting software in hundreds of thousands of its diesel cars that allowed them to pass emissions tests in the lab while polluting at up to almost 40 times the legal limit on the road. As both a member of Congress and a mother of two young children, I’ve worked to make sure our children have clean, breathable air by securing funding to reduce harmful emissions from antiquated diesel engines.
Volkswagen’s lies have set back our fight for clean air, and we need to demand the company take action to repair the damage.
Volkswagen’s high-emitting vehicles released thousands of additional tons of nitrogen oxide into our air. Thanks to its deception, we’ve all been breathing more of a dangerous pollutant that can cause emphysema, bronchitis and other respiratory diseases, particularly among vulnerable populations like children and the elderly. It’s unconscionable that Volkswagen would put our children’s health at risk to sell cars.
