LIUNA Local 183 business manager Jack Oliveira credited “a tireless commitment to organizing” with almost doubling the union’s size in the last five years. “When our executive board took over in 2011, we knew that we could only be as strong as our membership base,” he said in a statement. “That’s why we set a goal to reach 50,000 members to ensure as many construction workers and laborers in the greater Toronto area had fair wages and safe working environments.” Local 183, founded in 1952, represents building-trades workers in areas ranging from apartments to sewers, bridges to railroads and utilities sectors. It also represents health care, sanitation, and industrial workers in the Toronto area. Oliveira said the local union intends to have 55,000 members by 2020. Read more
