Texas Eyes Banning Dues Checkoff for Government Workers

Austin, TX – With a special session of the Texas Legislature beginning July 18, Gov. Greg Abbott wants to revive a bill that would prohibit the state or local governments from deducting union dues from workers’ paychecks.

Texans “should not be on the hook for collecting union dues,” Abbott said in a statement announcing the 20 items he wanted considered in the session. The state Senate passed a similar bill in March on a party-line vote, but it died in committee in the House. Rep. Jason Isaac (R-Dripping Springs) said July 12 that he would introduce a new version. “It’s simply not appropriate for labor unions to be given preferential treatment,” he said in a statement. “It’s long past time to end the outdated practice of using taxpayer-funded resources to collect dues for private organizations.” Texas State Teachers Association President Noel Candelaria has denounced the legislation as a politically motivated “selective attack” on teachers and public-sector workers. “It doesn’t cost governments anything to deduct their dues payments from their paychecks,” he said in March. “These dedicated public servants should be free to use their own money to pay their membership dues as they see fit.” Read more
